The Marina as an independent painting theme reached its peak in the Netherlands in the 17th century, and the first Croatian marine artist was Menci Clement Crnčić (Bruck na Muri, 1865. – Zagreb, 1930.). His professors during his studies in Vienna and Munich, especially Prof. Nikolaus Gysis, greatly influenced him. Isidor Kršnjavi sent Crnčić to study graphics with William Unger, and today nine of Crnčić's graphics are in the Vienna collection Albertina. His creativity was marked by frequent travels with Milan Šenoa, Oton Iveković and Tomislav Krizman. In his earlier creativity, he made portraits, in later periods marinas and coastal landscapes – for which he will be recognized until today. In mature creativity, subdued tones prevail in his works, as can be recognized in the oil on canvas that shows the ripple of the sea surface, like before a storm. Heavy and murky brown and green tones dominate, representing the twilight atmosphere. The horizon is placed high in the composition, contributing to the impression of infinity.
