Croatian painter Omer Mujadžić (Bosanska Gradiška, 1903. – Zagreb, 1991.) graduated in the class of Ljubo Babić at the Zagreb Academy and then perfected his skills in Paris and the Louvre, where he came into contact with Picasso, Derain and Lhote. He paints intimate portraits, self-portraits, as well as voluminous female nudes, landscapes, marines and views, and interiors. For a while, he turned to engaged art by participating in the work of the Earth group - he depicts child labor, peasants and workers, nightlife. The Second World War leaves its mark on Mujadžić's work and he puts traumatic war scenes on canvas, and then post-war reconstruction and construction. The oil on canvas presented here, The Portrait of a Doctor, is signed and dated. The softening of colors and shapes is seen with a light glaze that leads to softness and warmth. The man, the doctor, is portrayed in a simple but dignified pose with his hands in his lap. The background is neutral, and the attention is drawn to the penetrating blue eyes.
