Edo Murtić (Velika Pisanica, 1921 - Zagreb, 2005), a pioneer of abstract expressionism in Croatian painting, honed his skills in Zagreb under Ljubo Babić and in Belgrade under Petar Dobrović, who left a significant mark on Murtić's future creation. His early works are recognizably infused with left-wing political ideas. His stay in the USA and Canada brought him closer to abstract expressionism. Then comes the culmination of coloristic expression in large-format paintings with wide black strokes and explosions of color. The work shown here was also created during this period in 1974, in which Murtić reaches the heights of coloristic expression. His work is recognizable due to its rich palette, simple composition, and vigorous brush strokes that contribute to dynamism. Energetic brush strokes in predominantly blue, but also green, yellow, and red tones create a sense of movement, strength, and rhythm.
