PROVENANCE

Historical collection of the Vrhovac family, Zagreb; by inheritance to the present owner.

This intricate lithograph with several accompanying scenes was created in memory of the military campaigns and political movements of Ban Josip Jelacic and the forces of the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Slavonia and Dalmatia during the Revolution of 1848. As a significant symbol of counter-revolutionary forces aligned with the Habsburg Monarchy, Jelacic's actions against Hungarian rebels were extensively documented, prompting a strong development of the market for patriotic, narrative print media in Vienna and Zagreb. A detailed, bilingual textual explanation extends along the entire bottom edge. The left part contains text in old Croatian language in the standardized orthography of Ljudevit Gaj, while the right part repeats the same text in German in Gothic script (Fraktur). This bilingual representation mirrors the socio-political reality of the time, addressing both administrative class in Vienna from German-speaking regions and the newly-formed, literate Croatian national public.
