111. Refreshment at the Source [1930-ih]

1895, Zagreb - 1962, Zagreb

Estimate:
EUR 25.000 - 35.000

oil on canvas, 76 x 66.5 cm, signed lower right, in brown, "Varlaj"

Vladimir Varlaj (1895-1962) was a distinguished Croatian expressionist painter and a central figure in the Zagreb modern art scene between the two world wars. As an original member of the influential "Prague Four" (alongside Milivoj Uzelac, Vilko Gecan and Marijan Trepše), and later co-founder of the Group of Independent Artists, Varlaj developed a highly individualized style deeply rooted in magical realism, post-cubism and Cézanne-esque forms. He was greatly esteemed for his meticulously structured, tranquil landscapes of the Dalmatian coast and continental Croatia, in which he purified natural elements into simplified, geometric shapes. By the early 1930s, his artistic expression reached deep maturity. His landscapes from that period - like the works Valley in Front of Klek (circa 1930) and Maksimir Forest (1933) - seek even greater plastic clarity imbued with an atmospheric sense of isolation and cosmic tranquility. During this period, Varlaj introduced strict elements into his compositions such as railway lines, bridges and perfectly smooth, cubic houses, thereby opposing human geometry to natural irregularity. Moving away from strictly naturalistic colors, his landscapes from the 1930s use a refined palette of earth tones highlighted by sudden, radiant crimson and suggestive symbolic colors that give his meadows and forests an unearthly, dreamlike quality. The "magic realism" from his earlier years took on a quiet edge, characterized by elongated shadows and empty spaces that give his painted worlds a powerful atmosphere of poetic estrangement, thereby making these canvases the ultimate pinnacle of his landscape mastery.
