115. Portrait of a Lady [1919.-1920.]

1897, Zagreb - 1964, Zagreb

Estimate:
EUR 3.000 - 5.000

oil on canvas, 110 x 75 cm, signed lower right, in red, "Trepše M."

Marijan Trepše (Zagreb, 1897 - Zagreb, 1964) was a Croatian painter, graphic artist, and scenographer and was one of the most distinguished artists of the interwar period. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the class of Bela Čikoš-Sesija, and then perfected his craft in Prague and Paris. With Milivoj Uzelac, Vilko Gecan, and Vladimir Varlaj, he formed an informal group known as the Prague Four and participated in the exhibitions of the Spring Salon. In his early work, he was influenced by Cézannism, cubism, and expressionism, while after staying in Paris he approached neoclassicism. He painted portraits, nudes, landscapes, still lifes, and city life scenes, and stood out with his graphic works and making of stained glass. The oil on canvas depicts a woman in a seated position, with particular emphasis on her arms and face, in Trepše's recognizable move away from expressionism towards a firmer, neoclassical formation, while retaining expressionist features in stylization and face expression. The portrait is not executed realistically, but physical features are simplified and subordinated to volume. The reduction of detail in clothing further directs attention to the face and psychological expression of the portrait woman.
