Research information

The work was exhibited at the solo exhibition "Exhibition Vidović", Split, from 08.04. to 19.05.1929., and was catalogued in the accompanying catalogue under pastel works, cat. no. 107, under the title "Mostar Bridge". The work was then exhibited in Zagreb in 1929, during the hosting of Vidovic's celebratory exhibition.

Emanuel Vidović (Split, 1870 – Split, 1953) was a Croatian painter, educated at the Academy in Venice, and after returning to Split, he worked as a drawing teacher and was one of the founders of the Medulić art society. In his early creation, he painted views of Venice and Chioggia, and then motifs of Split and Trogir. Later, he turned to intimate scenes of his studio, church interiors and still lifes, gradually lightening his palette, with his painting characterized by poetics, atmosphere and a strong sense of light and color. He represents a bridge and surrounding architecture in green, brown and ochre tones on the oil canvas, with softened outlines and a misty atmosphere. The work fits into his mature creation where the landscape is no longer just a topographical representation, but a bearer of quiet, meditative and melancholic mood.
