oil on cardboard, 47 x 38 cm, signed lower right, in white, "Tartaglia"

Croatian painter Marino Tartaglia studied at the Building Technical School in Zagreb, then also in Florence and Rome where he met Italian futurists gathered around the Lacerba magazine. In 1918, he exhibited with prominent representatives of Italian avant-garde painting, such as Giorgio De Chirico. From 1931, he worked as a professor at the Zagreb Academy of Art. Tartaglia's stylistic development began with expressed expressionist characteristics with strong colouristic contrasts and bold volume construction. The Cezanne approach to shaping three-dimensional objects with facets, and a rich but subdued palette, made a strong impression on him. The painting represented here, with the depiction of a female act with raised hands, probably originated in the interwar period during Tartaglia's formative period. The naked female body of convincing plasticity is captured in the act of raising her hands with an incredible naturalness, in a kneeling pose skillfully executed from a shortened perspective.
