PROVENANCE

Historical collection of the Vrhovac family, Zagreb; through inheritance to the present owner.

The graphic depicts a Serezan soldier, a member of the elite irregular border units from Croatian Military Frontier. He is shown in full traditional military attire, with a recognizable red hat, long red cape, and a decorated leather belt bag containing a flintlock pistol, while holding a long rifle in his hand. During the Revolution of 1848, these fierce border guards served under the supreme command of Ban Josip Jelačić, who famously used a selected squad of Serezans as his personal bodyguard and elite recon unit. Original prints of this historical graphic are today preserved in major cultural institutions, including the Vienna Museum and the Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb.
