Ion Jalea belongs to the generation of Romanian sculptors from the early 20th century who contributed to the affirmation of modern Romanian sculpture, positioning himself at the confluence of academic tradition and new expressive formulas of European sculpture. His training in Bucharest, under the guidance of Dimitrie Paciurea and Frederic Storck, was followed by studies in Paris, where his teachers included Paul Landowski and Henri Bouchard. In the early stages of his creation, Jalea approached themes inspired by Romanian history, mythology, and tradition. Contact with French sculpture, especially his interest in the works of Auguste Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle, gradually led him away from the rigidity of academic formulas toward a more expressive sculpture built through volume, rhythm, and character. An important aspect of Ion Jalea’s work is the human figure, particularly portraits and representations of the female figure. The sculptor is concerned not only with physical resemblance but also with capturing the character, individuality, and inner state of the subject. The figure is rendered in a clear and serious manner, with the artist abandoning anecdotal details in favor of well-defined and harmoniously organized forms. The girl’s face is characterized by a mysterious and attentive expression, where Jalea does not seek to idealize feminine
