Nicolae Grigorescu advocates for the honesty of sentiment and champions the representation of the native landscapes in a deeply purified, pictorial, and synthesized manner through the charm of art. The countless summers spent in the midst of nature, in valleys and mountains, endowed the artist with the Romanian ethos that would dominate his entire work. His solo exhibitions introduced Nicolae Grigorescu to the elite of the era, and his works thus found their way into reputable collections such as those of Queen Elisabeth, Alexandru Vlahuță, Iosif Dona, and Constantin Istrati. With an extraordinary reflectiveness, our artist contemplated the condition of the rural man and created a genuine panorama of the Romanian rural space. Portraits of shepherd boys are therefore an inseparable part of his repertoire. Rendered closely and as faithfully as possible to reality, with the features of the common man burdened by labor; or placed in landscapes, herding flocks of sheep or cattle, Grigorescu’s shepherd boys immerse us in the specific atmosphere of the period, within the rural setting pierced by sunlight, with azure skies and tender grass. We will observe how the silhouettes of peasants begin to appear in his work as early as the pieces created in Câmpulung.
