The work is representative of Arthur Verona's mature period, when he combined the tradition of Romanian painting and rural themes with modern concerns for light, color, atmosphere, and plein air painting. His style was influenced by realism, naturalism, impressionism, and was not limited to a single theme or style, as he created portraits, still lifes, rural landscapes, and religious scenes. The work can also be understood in relation to Nicolae Grigorescu's painting tradition, through their shared interest in the Romanian village, peasants, peasant women, traditional costumes, rural scenery, and simple scenes from everyday life. Verona adopts these themes from Grigorescu and combines them with his own concerns for color, light, and atmosphere. At Grigorescu, the peasant woman often symbolizes simple, authentic beauty; at Verona, the character is more closely tied to the landscape, appearing to be part of it, where together with the forest and light, they form the entire scene. The character is captured in motion, and the scene can be interpreted as an image of a woman heading to fill the water jug at the river. Nature plays an essential role in the composition; the forest is not just a background for the figure but contributes to the overall atmosphere of the work
