oil on canvas, 60.5 x 90.5 cm, Signed and dated bottom left, in black, "E. Volkers, 1882"

German 19th-century painter whose activity is part of the Düsseldorf School of Painting tradition, known for equestrian painting and realistic representation of horses, studied in Dresden and Munich, where he came into contact with the animal painting tradition and the works of Albrecht and Franz Adam, renowned for equestrian and battle scenes. His passion for horses developed from childhood, when he had the opportunity to observe horses and activity around stables closely. Direct observation later became one of the essential features of his art. Volkers' style is characterized by realism, precision, attention to anatomy, detail, posture, and movement. Horses are depicted with exceptional accuracy, but the artist's interest extends beyond the animal to include its relationship with humans and the environment in which it lives. An important moment was his 1867 journey to Romania, made at the invitation of Carol I, which broadened his artistic repertoire. In addition to equestrian portraits, Volkers began to more frequently depict peasants, riders, carts, traditional costumes, tents, animals, and rural landscapes, with similar works such as "On the Road," "At the Fountain," "Nomads," or "Rest in the Field," which are housed in the National Museum of Art of Romania, as well as museums in Germany and Austria
