8. Jewish Merchants from Iași

1872, Corni, Botoșani - 1944, Bucureşti

Estimate:
EUR 4.000 - 7.500
Sold
EUR 8.000

oil on canvas, 36.5 x 39 cm, 39x36,5, signed upper right "Octav Băncilă", in brown

In painting the Jew, Băncilă was influenced by the geographical vicinity of the Târgu Cucu neighbourhood in Iași, where they lived at the beginning of the year 1900. He depicted Jews in various stances, from cobblers and tailors to usurers and peddlers. Their portraits do not lack a specific social critique, the "Usurer" painted in several versions being depicted with a look absorbed by calculations and a greenish tonality, while the "Water Carrier" is shown slouched and barefoot, with a frozen beard, the painter showing thus clear-cut class differences in the community.

For clarifications regarding the bidding procedure, hammer price costs, guarantee, payment, and collection terms for the winning lot, we recommend carefully reading/re-reading the Bidding Regulations.
