Man as a representative of a group was a constant feature in the works of Băncilă throughout his career, particularly after he returned from his studies in Munich. In the compositional structure, landscapes were ignored by the artist, who organised space around the characters who peopled it entirely, in dramatic foregrounds, a feature specific to Băncilă as early as the works in the "1907" cycle. From the first decade of the 20th century, following the same concept, he began to paint small craftsmen, the "God-forsaken" people, picturesque figures in the slums, who were also the favourite topic of literature at the time. Cobblers, tailors, carpenters, everyone could be found among the array of characters painted by Băncilă on his canvas. The Jew as archetype entered the visual universe of Băncilă from the very first period of his artistic maturity, particularly after 1910, when the cycle began to take shape. Discovered and analysed in the slums of the town, in Păcurari or in Târgul Cucului, the Jews of Băncilă outline him once more as an involved, left-wing artist who analyses the society of the early 20th century, given that in 1930 only one third of the population of Iași was Jewish.
