In creating his nudes, Camil Ressu always remains faithful to the architecture of the human body, depicted in such a way as to be in accord with reality and to the classical canons of Renaissance inspiration. The configuration of his nudes shows a sense of measure and proportion, the transposed ideal of beauty expressing plain vivacity and the naturalness of carnality disavowed, however, by sensuality. Ressu does not just individualise his female characters, but offers them an identity, proving to be a great master in the art of conveying details addressed to the tangible. Even though he is sparing with colour, the artist uses tones, shadows and soft half-shadows to depict the details of the human body. The tactile is targeted by the painter's ability to capture the texture of hair or the velvet touch of skin, along with subtle smiles or seemingly hidden glints of the model; they become true artistic values in his paintings. With a vision related to the robustness of human shapes specific to Michelangelo and to the Renaissance in general, as well as to the voluptuous carnality of Rubens, Ressu gives his nudes a type of beauty that is closer to nature, an almost heroic one. Painted in a didactic manner, with a model, with preparatory sketches, Ressu's nude captures vitality with its vivid, strong, vibrating palette that reminds us of the Fauves's passion for raw colours.
