The scene unfolds against a white background, within an architectural frame. The Child stands on a bundle of hay in front of the Virgin Mary, who is holding his hand. Behind the cradle, an angel is kneeling, along with the three wise men, one of whom is also kneeling. Behind the Virgin Mary, who is clothed in a red cloak and a golden tunic, stands Saint Joseph. Centrally, a large star is lowering its rays between the heads of two horses (actually an ox and a donkey). (A.D.)
