Yongzheng (1678 1735) was the fourth emperor of the Qing dynasty. He was known for his strong character and his tax and administrative reforms carried out during his rule. He appreciated the beauty and uniqueness of works of art, encouraging production in the workshops of the imperial palace and developing strong relationships with national artists. He sought to revive porcelain art (which was in decline at the time), and his artists were looking for inspiration in the enamelled ceramics of the Song dynasty, the models of Ming dynasty and the shapes of Tang dynasty. An exacting emperor, he made sure that the quality of the works of art in that period was remarkable. Although this porcelain vessel belongs to the 20th century, a time of rebirth of artistic styles, it is faithful to the motifs and the working technique of Yongzheng Emperor's workshops.
