Qi Baishi (1 January 1864-16 September 1957) was a Chinese painter, known particularly for his watercolour paintings and his lively, playful style. He was influenced by artists of the Ming dynasty (Xu Wei), as well as of the Qing dynasty (Zhu Da). The subjects of his works are varied, most often including animals, birds, plants or vegetables, painted very small. His admiration and respect for nature can be noticed in his energetic touches and his bright colours, creating works that are full of vitality. He was the Honorary President of the Beijing Painting Academy, as well as Chairman of the Chinese Artists' Association in 1953, where he was active until his death.
