Andy Warhol began working on the Elvis portrait series in 1963. Warhol's most famous works with Elvis (such as "Double Elvis" or "Triple Elvis") were based on a promotional image from the 1960 Western film, "Flaming Star", which portrayed Presley as a gunslinger. Warhol's fascination with Elvis came from his image as a "metabrand", surpassing the individual framework of the star, similar to subjects like Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor or Santa Claus. The repetition and mechanical appearance of these serigraphs were meant to reflect industrial production, the idea of mass culture and the culture of spectacle, of celebrities, the STAR system.
