Included in TIME magazine's list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century, Pelé entered sports history as the top scorer during his career. In Brazil, Pelé is considered to be a national hero for his achievements in football and his support in improving the social conditions of the poor. In 1961, Brazilian President Jânio Quadros declared that Pelé is a "national treasure". Throughout his career, he became known as "The Black Pearl" (Pérola Negra), "The King of Football" (O Rei do Futebol), "King Pelé" (O Rei Pelé), or simply "The King" (O Rei).
