In Brazil, Pelé is considered a national hero for his achievements in football and support for policies to improve the social conditions of the poor. In 1961, the President of Brazil Jânio Quadros declared Pelé to be "a national treasure". Throughout his career, he became known as "The Black Pearl" (Pérola Negra), "The King of Football" (O Rei do Futebol), "King Pelé" (O Rei Pelé) or simply "The King" (O Rei).
