Included by TIME magazine in the list of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century, Pelé has entered the history of sport as the top scorer during his career. In Brazil, Pelé is considered a national hero for his achievements in football and support for policies to improve the social conditions of the poor. In 1961, the President of Brazil Jânio Quadros declared Pelé to be "a national treasure". Throughout his career, he became known as "The Black Pearl" (Pérola Negra), "The King of Football" (O Rei do Futebol), "King Pelé" (O Rei Pelé) or simply "The King" (O Rei).
