Nicknamed "Der Kaiser", Ionuț Lupescu played 74 matches for the Romanian national team and participated in the 1990 World Cup. After his performance in the World Cup, he was noticed by the German team Bayer Leverkusen, where he was transferred for $800,000. At this team, he met Franz Beckenbauer, the legendary footballer of Germany.
