A similar lot was sold for €480 at "Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft" auction house, Arnsberg, Germany, December 13, 2012. The 3 Lei coin is one of the rarest and hardest to find coins of the communist era. The planned mintage for 1954 was 33,400,000 pieces, but it was only very slightly executed. The number of 3 bani 1954 coins put into circulation is unknown. The catalogue quotations are much higher for the 3 bani 1954 (even 40-50 times higher) than the quotations for the 3 bani 1953 coin. It has a format imposed by the norms and standards of the Soviet Union, equivalent to 3 kopecks. Since 1953 Romania's coat of arms has been emblazoned with the red star. A similar change occurred at the same time with the coat of arms of Czechoslovakia or Bulgaria.
