The box was used in English masonic rituals and it contains: a level, a plumb bob, a twenty-four inch gauge, a chalk line, a gavel, a square and compasses, a chisel and a stiletto. The objects in the box are specific to the first three degrees, Blue Freemasonry, each having a physical and symbolic significance.
