The columns placed at the entrance to the Temple, to the West, in memory of those that Hiram placed at the entrance to the Temple of Solomon, symbolise duality. The one with three pomegranates refers to the female element, Air, the breath that feeds life, female sensitivity, the Mercury of the Wise. The other, which supports the Globe, refers to the male element, Fire, devouring vital heat, activity, the Sulfur of the Alchemists. From the duplicity of the symbol of the column rises the dichotomy between the vertical and the horizontal, between terrestrial and aerial values, the pursuit of opposites and complementary principles. From a historical point of view, aside from its architectural significance, the "column" has the connotations of height, strength, tension, robustness and structure. Jachin is therefore the Force, and Boaz is, traditionally, from the name of David's great-grandfather, the royal pillar, the one that symbolised the concept of Mishpat, justice, during Solomon's time.
