acrylic on canvas, 121 x 146 cm, signed lower right, in black, "SEDER"

Đuro Seder (Zagreb, 1927 – Zagreb, 2022) was a Croatian painter and academician. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in the class of Antun Mejzdić, where he later taught and earned the title of professor emeritus. He worked for a time as a technical editor and graphic designer for several magazines and illustrated children's books, while also publishing poetry in the magazines Razlog, Kolo, Forum, and Republika. He was a regular member of HAZU. His earliest works were influenced by post-Impressionism and Professor M. Tartaglia, under whom he completed his specialization. While a member of the Gorgona art group, he painted abstract, non-figurative, later monochromatic with a thick coat of paint. He reintroduced color to his canvases with free brush movements in the 1970s. He is considered one of the initiators of new painting, painting with emphasized color, thick coatings and expressive motifs. In the nineties he began painting biblical motifs and on commission also created church stained glass windows. The biblical motif of the sower from the New Testament parable Seder depicts on acrylic on canvas under the title Sower from 1994. The painting is signed in the lower right corner. Seder does not concern himself with details in the painting and only expresses what is essential in the sower's physiognomy, drawing with basic strokes. Dense coatings of shades of yellow are brought to the canvas with characteristically broad strokes of free line.
