Rober Auer (Zagreb, 1873 – Zagreb, 1952) was a Croatian painter who remained faithful to Art Nouveau until his death. He studied in Zagreb, Vienna, Munich, and also spent some time living and working in the USA. He painted still life, portraits, allegorical compositions, and sensual nudes. It was his female nudes that became a hallmark of his work. The oil on panelling piece entitled "Smile" is signed and dated in the lower right corner. This was created during the final decade of the artist's life. It depicts a female semi-profile, with a slight turn of the head, exuding simplicity and aesthetic appeal.
