Nikola Koydl (born in Karlovac in 1939 and died in Zagreb in 2020) experimented with the possibilities of abstraction throughout his creative life. The shapes on his canvases are mostly of organic inspiration. They correspond with a peculiar and puzzling approach to the tonal construction of picture elements and the textures which the artist pairs them with. This picture, titled 'Noćno sidrište' (Night Anchorage), is such a case. The shape in the lower area is the focus of the image and stands in dynamic balance with the texture above it. Despite the abstract expression, Koydl does not hesitate to give his paintings real-life references in associations to landscapes, seascapes, or certain emotions. They are transformed into a unique pictorial sign, expressed in his recognizable morphology. In this case, the title reveals a reference to an anchored ship and the nocturnal sea, which can also be read in the texture that predominates the image (which associates the shimmer of the sea in the moonlight) and in the elegant and closed central form. Koydl's shapes are often inexplicable, but also artistically measured. In the words of Grga Gamulin (in his book Nikola Koydl, published by GZH, 1989, which also reproduces this image), it is: “[...] a multitude of signs of particular individual and creative existence and spiritual state and movement […]".
