Edo Murtić (Velika Pisanica, 1921 – Zagreb, 2005) was a Croatian painter, graphic artist, and academician. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb under Professor Ljubo Babić. His earlier work was influenced by Professor Petar Dobrović. After the Second World War, he left engaged painting, in the 1950s he stayed in the USA and Canada where he approached abstract expressionism. In the next two decades, the culmination of coloristic expression in large-format paintings with broad black strokes and explosions of colors can be seen. Then in the '80s, he painted Mediterranean landscapes and began an expressionist cycle Eyes of Fear. At the turn of the millennium, he returned to abstraction and vibrant colors. Tempera on paper titled Composition 1 is a recognizable Murtić's work of rich color. The picture is dominated by lively, energetic colors — pink, blue, green. Colors are applied with a variety of brush strokes that create a feeling of movement and rhythm. The contrast between light and dark tones contributes to the drama of the image.
