Milan Konjović was born in Sombor in 1898, where he also died in 1993. His study of painting in Prague and his stay in Paris opened his art up to the influences of Central European expressionistic and French Fauvist trends in painting. In this landscape, we can see how he injected the plains of Vojvodina with expression through intense colours and energising strokes. Although this piece was created somewhat later in his oeuvre, it exhibits all the elements of modernistic painting syntax, which Konjović adopted throughout his creative career. The landscape is transformed into an artist's sentiment of the landscape, a temperament expressed in color. The specific location and its spatial relations are simplified to essential recognition. The most important accomplishment of this painting by Konjović is the dynamic relationship between the elements of its energetic construction. This ductus gives the impression of momentariness, as if capturing an ephemeral feeling. The painting is done with dense strokes and rich layers of color. In this way, the painterly language compresses all the potential energy of the displayed landscape, or everything that the landscape can represent to the viewer – whether associative or emotional.
