90. Mercedes, W123 coupe, 1977

The presentation of the coupe variant of the W123 series took place in June 1977, making it a first generation car. While the previous W115 coupe series was stylistically based on the sedan being very similar to it, the new 230 C, 230 CE, 280 C and 280 CE models were significantly independent of the limousine. The 85 mm shorter wheelbase coupled with the lowered roof and steeply sloping front and rear fenders gave the car a rugged, sporty look. Safety was improved over previous series coupes: along with the deformation areas taken from the sedan, the roof frame structure reinforced with roof pillars and reinforced doors, the coupe provided the passenger compartment more stability and security. The features of the two-door versions were inspired by the luxury versions of the four-door top models 280 and 280 E. This meant that all three coupe variants were equipped with rectangular wide-band headlights, chrome on the intake grille in front of the windshield and chrome strips below the taillights.
