Hartmann Schedel was a prominent physician and writer who assembled one of the largest private collections of books in the 15th century. Schedel's work is illustrated with over 1800 woodcuts signed by Michael Wohlgemut (1434-1519) and his son Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1460-1494). Wohlgemut, an important painter and engraver, is known for being an early teacher of Albrecht Dürer, who was an apprentice in Wohlgemut's studio from 1486 to 1489. It is believed that Dürer was involved in the production of several of the illustrations in Schedel's Liber Chronicarum, as work on the illustrations began while Dürer was an apprentice. A study of several illustrations suggests that they may have been drawn by Dürer, who would have prepared the drawings used as forms for the craftsmen cutting the engraving plates. The engraving does not represent one of the burgs located in Transylvania, it is probably an image taken from the German area, coloured later. Original watermarked paper, depicting a cross, in the middle of the page. The text presents a history of the intra-Carpathian territory, namely Transylvania. The Dacians, Darius' expedition north of the Danube and the wars with the Turks are mentioned. The text also mentions John of Hunedoara who, as regent of Hungary, undertook a series of successful military campaigns against the Ottoman Empire, leaving his son a secure and stable kingdom. His mother was Erzsébet Szilágyi (Elisabeta), from a very influential Hungarian noble family, daughter of Captain László Szilágyi of Horogszeg (Ladislau) of the fortress of Bradics and sister of Mihai Szilágyi, Transylvanian prince and Hungarian regent.
