Johann Baptist Homann (1663-1724) was a German cartographer, editor and engraver, whose typography business will be continued by his sons. He lived his entire life in Bavaria, especially in Nuremberg. In 1702 he founded a publishing house specialized in engraving and printing maps, which became one of the most important businesses of its kind in Germany and in Europe. In 1715, Homann was appointed imperial geographer of the Holy Roman Empire by Charles VI and became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. His most important work is "The Great Atlas of the World", of which this piece is part, in an edition released around 1720. Colored copper engraving manually after printing.
