The Katana sword was part of the Japanese officers' uniform at the beginning of the 20th Century, as well as during the First World War. The steel blade was produced through manual forging. The steel pieces were hammered and folded several times, so that impurities could be eliminated and the carbon content could be homogenised. On each of the blade's sides, one can notice the extremely fine striations demonstrating this technological procedure. At the end, the blade was very carefully sharpened. Five fabrication traditions are attested. The handle is made of wood, covered in Dasyatis skin, as well as strips of fabric, decorated with stylised brass vegetable motifs. The guard (tsuba) is made of bronze and the sheath is made of metal, decorated with stylised brass vegetable elements.
