Anna de Noailles, born Anna Elisabeth Bibesco-Bassarab de Brancovan, was part of the great boyar family Brâncoveanu, being the daughter of Grigore Bibescu (Brâncoveanu). Born in Paris in 1876, she did not follow her Romanian roots, becoming one of the great Parisian figures. After her marriage to Count Mathieu de Noailles, she became Countess of Noailles, which also became her literary name, with which she made her debut in poetry around 1900. Her role in aristocracy and the arts of the early 20th century is undeniable, as shown by the renowned literary circle around her: from Marcelo Proust, with whom she had a close friendship, to Jean Cocteau or Paul Valéry, Anna de Noailles became not just a great host, but also a muse of many fine artists. She was painted by Ignacio Zuloaga, Jacques Emile Blanche, Jean Louis Forain, Kees Van Dogen, Edouard Vuillard or Philip Alexis de Laszlo, while Auguste Rodin sculpted her bust. Eustațiu Stoenescu entered this literary and artistic world from the very beginning of the 20th century, with a renowned appetite for French culture. His attraction to one of the symbols of Parnassianism is easy to guess, especially since the Countess of Noailles had captured the attention of the most important portrait artists of the time. Moreover, one of Stoenescu's masters and a good friend of his in Paris was Jacques Emile Blanche, who made a portrait of the Countess of Noailles in 1919. In the 1930s, Stoenescu painted the portrait of another member of the Brâncoveanu family, namely Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu Basarab, Anne’s brother.
