5. Chronology of the last hours in the life of Marshal Ion Antonescu, written in handwriting by Miron Mărculescu, husband of the Marshal's niece, Rodica Mărculescu, on the 1st June 1946 (2 pages), preserved in the family.

The lot comes from the archive of Marshal Ion Antonescu's great-niece, Rodica Mărculescu, the niece who grew up in his family after she was orphaned at the age of two. She had a special relationship with the Marshal's wife, whom she cared for and assisted after 1946. The wife, Rica, bequeathed several belongings that used to belong to her and the Marshal. These belongings have remained in the niece's family until today.
In a memoir about Ioan Petru Culianu, Șerban C. Andronescu tells us, referring to these belongings, that: “Philippe was a popular journalist in Paris during Marshal Petain's time when Romania was led by Marshal Antonescu, and Artemisa was friends with Rodica Mărculescu. Left an orphan at two, Rodica was brought up close to Ion Antonescu; she was like his close sister, and as Mizica said, she died in her arms in the old apartment on Mosilor Alley 246. Mizica left her a few items of the Antonescu family, Mrs. Maria Antonescu's mink coat, the gold watch with chain of the marshal, letters and other things like this.”
Beyond the biography of the person - condemned by the People's Tribunal on 17 May 1946 for war crimes - from whom the few preserved family items originate, these represent historical evidence, which can be known and researched. The project of introducing them for auction does not in any way seek to beautify the biography and deeds of Marshal Ion Antonescu or to sugarcoat, no matter how slightly, the decisions that led to the Holocaust or military actions on one side or the other of the violent historical period.
