The 1930s will be a prolific period in Gheorghe Petrașcu's life, both in terms of his artistic successes and the plethora of distinctions and roles that came to crown the results of his work up to that point. In 1929, Petrașcu was thus appointed director of the State Pinacotheque. Starting from 1930, he undertook several trips to Venice, Mangalia, Balchik, Kaliakra, Silistra and Brașov; the Black Sea or the Adriatic Sea, and he incorporated the subjects of his travels into his work, elevating them to the rank of artistic motifs. The sea will become one of his favorite themes. He would often capture it from the shore, in all its complexity. Sometimes he would add a frugally sketched silhouette. We will notice the subject of the current work often reiterated during the 1930-1940 period. The elegant woman, in a long dress, shawl and hat, most likely embodies his wife, Lucreția. Thus, he manages to portray also the moral characterization of the character, given his close relationship with her. Petrașcu presents himself here as a colorist who saturates the pictorial surfaces and applies paint with a knife. The effervescent brushwork accentuates the hues of ochre, brown and white that make up the contour of the shore. The paint applied in consistent layers amplifies the viewer's perception of the seascape, and the sea becomes a constant in his creation. However, not just the sea, but the journey itself contributes to the development of his imagination. The countless expeditions to Techirghiol, undertaken with his wife, later recorded through thick paint in a series of works where Lucreția poses unflinchingly on the shore, protecting herself from the sun's incandescence with her elegant umbrella, will form the basis for an exhibition organized by the artist in 1936 at the Dalles Foundation.
