Obverse: DN ANASTA-SIVS PP AVG (Our Lord Anastasius Perpetual Augustus); The emperor's bust with helmet and cuirass, slightly facing right, holding a spear over his right shoulder and a shield on his left arm. Reverse: VICTORI-A AVGGG I (Victoria of the Augusti) / CONOB (Constantinopolis Obryziacum); Victoria standing to the left, holding a long cross adorned with jewelry, a star on the right. Emperor Anastasius I (491–518) was a crucial figure in consolidating the Byzantine Empire after a period of political and financial instability. His reign is considered a transitional moment between Late Antiquity and Medieval Byzantium, marked by administrative, financial, and religious reforms that left a lasting imprint on the empire. One of Anastasius's most notable achievements was his fiscal reform. He eliminated the tax called chrysargyron, extremely unpopular and considered oppressive, and reorganized the tax system to be more equitable and efficient. Through careful management of resources, he managed to balance the state budget and leave the imperial treasury full at the end of his reign - a rare event for that time. In the military sphere, Anastasius fortified the borders and strengthened the empire's defense, building, among other things, the famous Anastasian Wall near Constantinople to protect the capital from barbarian invasions. Religiously, Anastasius's reign was tense. He supported Monophysitism, a heresy seen as dangerous by the official Church, leading to internal conflicts, especially with the Orthodox population in Constantinople. This religious positioning earned him opposition from the clergy and affected the religious cohesion of the empire. Through his economic, administrative, and defense measures, Anastasius I laid the foundation for the long-term stability and prosperity of Byzantium. Even though his religious policies were controversial, his contributions to governance and reform had a positive and long-lasting impact, making him one of the most capable Byzantine emperors of the fifth century.
