Voivode Petru Musat, who ruled in Moldova between 1375 and 1391, is considered one of the most important leaders in the early history of the Moldovan state. His reign represented a moment of political, administrative, and economic consolidation of Moldova, laying the foundations of solid state organization and active international diplomacy.
One of the most significant aspects of Petru Musat's reign was the establishment of a vassal relationship with the Kingdom of Poland. In 1387, he recognized himself as a vassal of the Polish king Ladislaus II Jagiello, through a wise political act, which allowed him to obtain the protection of a great power, while maintaining his internal autonomy. This decision ensured Moldova a safer position against external pressures, especially from Hungary and the Tatars, and created the premises for favourable commercial and diplomatic relations with the West.
Petru Musat also distinguished himself by an exceptionally important monetary activity: he was the first Moldovan voivode to issue his own currency, a clear symbol of the state's economic and political independence. His silver coins – the Moldavian groschen – bear inscriptions in Latin and display the country's coat of arms, being evidence of the consolidation of princely authority and the integration of Moldova into the European economic system.
Domestically, Petru Musat's reign meant stability and strengthening of state institutions. He supported the Orthodox Church, strengthened the network of fortresses, and favoured the development of commerce and cities, thus contributing to the economic growth of Moldova.
