109. Carol VI Medal, Liberation of Timisoara, Habsburg Empire, 1716

The liberation of Timișoara under Charles VI in 1716 represented a turning point in the history of the city and the Banat region, marking the end of Ottoman rule and the start of a new era of modernization under the Habsburg authority. The event came within the context of the Austro-Turkish War (1716-1718) fought between the Habsburg Empire and the Ottoman Empire, where Emperor Charles VI wanted to strengthen the southeastern borders of his empire. Under the command of the great General Eugene of Savoy, the imperial army besieged Timișoara, one of the most important Ottoman fortresses in the region. After a siege of over a month, the city was liberated in October 1716, ending 164 years of Ottoman rule. The importance of this event is manifold. First and foremost, the liberation of Timișoara meant the end of Ottoman control over the Banat region, transforming the city into a symbol of Christian victory over Muslim dominance in Central Europe. Secondly, under the Habsburg administration, the city underwent a comprehensive process of reconstruction, fortification, and urban development, becoming a premier military, economic, and cultural center. Thus, Timișoara was transformed into a veritable gateway between Central Europe and Southeast Europe. In the long term, the liberation of Timișoara favored the stability and security of the region, boosted colonization with German, Hungarian, and Serbian populations, and laid the foundation for a multiethnic and multicultural coexistence that would come to define Banat's identity in the subsequent epochs.
