The obverse presents the face of the goddess Athena, the protector of the city, and the reverse shows the owl, a symbol of wisdom and vigilance, alongside the olive branch (peace, prosperity) and the letters ΑΘΕ (abbreviation for "Αθηναίων" - "of the Athenians"). This design is considered a artistic standard in ancient numismatics, instantly recognisable. The Tetradrachm was issued during the period when Athens was in its prime - the era of Pericles - when the city dominated the Greek world politically, militarily and culturally. The coin reflects this power and prestige. It was a reference currency in the ancient world, accepted throughout the Mediterranean and even beyond. It was so stable and recognized that it almost functioned as an "international currency standard". Struck from pure silver, extracted from the mines of Laurion, the coin was an instrument of commercial economy and of the payments of the Athenian state, including for the payment of citizens who participated in democratic life (e.g., jurors, soldiers, officials). The Tetradrachm influenced the monetary systems of other city-states. We can say that it was not just a coin, but an ambassador of Athenian civilization, remaining relevant today in collections and historical studies.
