Obverse: Bull's head with star between horns, rosette and crescent on sides, and the legend "+ MONETAMOLDAVIE". Reverse: Shield with a double cross and anchored heads and the legend "+ STEFANVSVOIEVODA". Saint Stephen the Great, canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church, was the ruler of Moldova for an extended period, being in control between 1457 and 1504, that is, for 47 years, which represents the longest reign interval among all the medieval Romanian Countries. The coins issued during his reign are groschen and half groschen, part of the Ottoman aspers system, which continues the monetary reform started by Petru Aron (1455-1457). The coins minted by Stephen the Great have a special importance from a historical, economic, political and cultural point of view. Here is why they are so valuable in the history of Romanians: 1. Affirmation of Moldova's independence: In an era when many states around Moldova were vassals or under foreign influence, the issuance of its own currency was a symbol of sovereignty. By minting coins, Stephen the Great showed that Moldova is an independent state with full authority. 2. Strengthening the internal economy: The coins minted during his reign facilitated internal and external trade exchanges, payment of soldiers and officials, collection of taxes and duties. Therefore, the currency was a tool of economic stability in a period marked by wars and crises. 3. Political propaganda and image Stephen the Great's coins bore the coat of arms of Moldova (the bull's head) and sometimes, the ruler's name. It was a form of visual communication that communicated: Stephen's authority, the legitimacy of his power, and citizens belonging to an organized and strong state. 4. Documentary and archaeological value Today, the coins minted by Stephen the Great are primary sources for historians: they show the technological level of the time, offer information about trade relations, show artistic and cultural influences. 5. Influence in the area Through the circulation of Moldovan coins beyond its borders, Moldova became an active economic player in the region. The Moldovan currency was accepted and used also in Wallachia, Poland or Transylvania, which reflects the prestige of Stephen's reign.
