Sigismund Bathory was the Prince of Transylvania between 1581 and 1597, being a significant ruler of the region in the sixteenth century. During this period, Transylvania was an autonomous principality under Ottoman suzerainty, with its internal politics influenced by the conflicts in Central and Eastern Europe. The issuance of the Ducat coin reflects the internal stability of the principality and the desire to assert itself economically and politically in the face of neighboring empires (Habsburg Empire, Ottoman Empire, Kingdom of Poland). The Ducat was a coin of high value, used for significant payments and for international trade. Ducat-type coins issued in Transylvania had a high economic value and were often accepted in trade throughout Central and Eastern Europe.
