192. Studio Still Life [1972]

Considered a continuer of painters who had a special concern for color in Romanian painting, such as Luchian, Ressu or Pallady, he graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest, continuing his studies at the Julian Academy in Paris and in the workshop of Andre Lohte. Also, Matisse and Cézanne were sources of inspiration for him in valuing line and color in his works. His creation went through various stages throughout his career, but maintained two important constants: color and clarity of composition. During the period 1945-1960, his art went through various trials and destabilized, however, managing to reinvent itself and return with a surprising approach: greatly narrowing the color, usually limiting himself to two primary colors. Thus, one of his favorite themes will be still nature with flowers. He admired the flowers painted by his precursors, especially those of Luchian. He is inspired by the artist's work, but his flowers remain anchored in a representation in which the emphasis is placed more on chromatics, while form takes on secondary valences. The painter uses various methods in building his works, where sometimes he delineates the volume with a precise, strong line and thus creates the impression of a rhythmic juxtaposition of objects. At other times his colors mark subtle transitions, which are applied in unique tonal gradients. He emphasizes the uniformity of light following the logic of reality and carefully distributes chromatic effects. Regarding the work at hand, it captures a still nature with flowers and a few vessels. His work dates from 1972 and is located in the period after the Second World War, when he began to create more and more such works with still nature as the main element. The entire composition is placed on an imaginary table, where in the center the artist places four vessels. Two of them are pots, where several green plants are painted inside, and the rest are empty. The artist pays attention to the symmetry of the organization of the vessels and their positioning. First the pot with plants is noticed, then an empty one, again one with plants, and finally again an empty one, thus the work is balanced and provides a tone of symmetry and spirit of organization. Also, all elements are slightly geometric and placed on a blue background with yellow to create a subtle warm-cold contrast. The color palette of the work is mostly reduced to just a few colors, such as green in the case of plants, orange in the case of ceramic pots and blue for the background of the scene, where within it a picture frame without a photograph and yellow in color can also be observed as an element that completes the rest of the scene. Although it is a closed and static composition, the modulated line creates a dialogue with the color spots that have a uniform treatment.
