Ciucurencu studied at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest with G. D. Mirea and Camil Ressu, the latter guiding him to study in France, at the Julian Academy. In the Parisian artistic environment, under the influence of André Lhote (1885-1962), he came into contact with the art of Cezanne, the Fauvists and the Cubists. Ciucurencu was fascinated by Lhote's artistic personality, as well as by his theoretical discourse, which postulated the rigor for drawing that Camil Ressu had instilled in him. In the interwar period (1932-1945), Ciucurencu will stand out in Romanian art as one of the most important modernists. Even if the period 1945-1960 would know various attempts, sometimes clumsy, influenced by his statues and especially by the political regime, the last stage of Ciucurencu's creation knows a revival and an exceptional approach to stylization. The synthesis of the line and the passion for balance of masses focus on a form of abstractionism, and the colours narrow. In the case of still lifes, towards the dominance of two primaries, one cold, blue and one warm, red and their infinite hues. Shapes are no longer aggressively delineated by black strokes, but remain contoured by their own mass of color that defines them.
