47. Reading [1915]

Under the guidance of Theodor Aman, he perfected his drawing and learned the technique of engraving, becoming one of the most reputable graphic artists of his generation. His works have shown a special concern for the life of people in the rural area, but he often illustrated the city world, craftsmen, workers, as well as the joy of holidays and village dances. In his work, he aims to capture psychological effects through compositional organization, successively going through the peculiarities of German and French Impressionism. In the period of his maturity, which is between the years 1900-1918, the artist focuses on the realization and better definition of the portrait. As far as their realization is concerned, the emphasis is on psychological features, on highlighting the moral characteristics of the depicted character, wanting to capture their concerns. The work is dated 1915 and captures Nicolae Vermont in the role of the painter of daily intimacy, with a young woman in the foreground, inside a room, on a chair, while she is reading a book. The composition is balanced, carefully built around the female silhouette that dominates the entire composition. The young woman is captured in a moment of concentration and tranquility, with a calm expression, absorbed by the universality of the book. The position of the body is relaxed, and the entire space transmits a warm and soothing atmosphere.
