"Still Life with Fruit Bowl and Mirror" introduces us into one of the most specific subjects of Vasile Popescu's creation, being a version of "Still Life with Mirror", exhibited in 1936 at the Official Salon (today in the collection of the National Museum of Art of Romania). That work and implicitly the cycle which it was part of became one of the most important approaches of the still life theme in Romanian modern painting. The present work, the closest interpretation of that painting, certainly repeats the central motif of the fruit bowl, but perhaps more importantly, it marks the stage in Popescu's creation in which white is the compositional pictorial centre. The frame of the mirror found in the painter's home, an object of clear visual and symbolistic resonance, painted in lime white, introduces by contrast a chromatic discourse limited to the period 1935-1940, defining these exceptional works made by Popescu in those years.
