In his creation, the artist primarily appeals to the subconscious and sharply ignores logical interferences. Mazilu compresses the human silhouette to the point of abstraction and focuses his attention on the faces of his characters, which he considers one of the most expressive parts of the body, along with hands and feet. We will notice that in many of his works, the facial features assigned to the protagonists are very expressive. Noses are, often, very prominent and rendered in an eloquent manner. The whole composition gravitates around the characters, who are never reproductions of existing beings, but are detailed constructions based on the artist's imagination. The space and atmosphere appear at the end, in close concordance with the partially humanized puppet-characters. Mazilu becomes a virtuoso of the aesthetics of ugliness, and creates true pictorial metaphors of the fantastic. The world in his canvases is utopian and takes on the attributes of an imaginary realm and a reality diametrically opposed to the known one. The artist constructs the story of his works as he paints. He becomes a puppet master in a puppet theater and focuses his plastic discourse with astonishing expressive force around the compositional chimeras.
