Ludwig Angerer (1827-1879) was one of the pioneers of photography from Habsburg and Austro-Hungarian Empire, appointed court photographer by Emperor Franz Joseph. He studied medicine and pharmacy at the University in Pesta and in 1854 he was employed in the medical division of the Austrian army as a military pharmacist. At the outbreak of the Crimean War, the Austrian Empire joined the anti-Russian coalition and occupied the territory of the Principality of Wallachia. In this situation, accompanied by the imperial troops, Angerer arrives in Bucharest. His passion for chemistry brought him closer to the newly discovered photographic technique. The remarkable interest for this art developed quickly and he transformed it in one of the pioneers of the empire. He opened his photographic studio in 1858 in Vienna, and was appointed court photographer by the emperor shortly after. His brother Victor, joined him shortly after. During his stay in Bucharest he took a series of photographs depicting several parts of the capital of Muntenia. The pieces, of which this one is a part, are very valuable both in terms of their artistic achievement and in terms of information about Bucharest at the time. Angerer can be considered the first photographer in the capital. The present example shows a portion of Calea Mogoșoaiei (today's Calea Victoriei) seen from the building of the National Theatre. The camera also captured the panorama of the city as it appeared from that angle. The first building on the left side housed Carol Popp de Szathmary's photographic studio on the ground floor, whose window can be seen in the photo. In the left lower corner is the date, 1856, and in the right lower corner is the name of the photographer. The backing is salted paper, which makes the piece rarer than copies printed on albumen paper. The passepartout is made by lithography. The photography is in a very good state of preservation.
